Newborns sleep a lot – typically up to 16 to 17 hours a day.
But most babies don’t stay asleep for more than two to four hours at a time, day or night, during the first few weeks of life.
How long should newborns be awake?
Most newborn babies (under 8 weeks) can’t stay awake very long (I sometimes refer to this as a baby’s “window of wakefulness.”) Although it varies by baby, most newborns can stay awake no longer than 45 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes. Some may not be able to stay awake more than 30 minutes at a time.
Is it normal for a newborn to be awake all day?
The natural span of awake time is very, very short for a newborn baby and gradually increases over time. At about three months of age some babies still need a nap every hour or two, but some can be awake as long as three hours, if they are routinely sleeping well at night and getting good, long naps.

Why is my newborn not sleeping?
Avoid sleep-inducing activities, if at all possible, during the day. Don’t fight your baby’s need to sleep. Some experts recommend swaddling babies at night so their arms and legs don’t move and wake them. You can also try putting them to sleep in a small crib so they feel snug and secure.
